Victoria Gutierrez de Sandoval, (Victoria Ruffo) who is introduced in the beginning and is attracted to Juan Pablo Iturbide de Montejo, (Diego Olivera) who is a future priest and son of Octavio Iturbide, (Eduardo Santamarina) and Bernarda Montejo Vda. de Iturbide, (Daniela Romo) who is the homeowner of the Mr. and Ms. Iturbide's house where both was employed. This attraction is reciprocated and on a night of passion, Victoria was becomes pregnant, she discovers the pregnancy and throws Victoria out of her house without Juan Pablo knowing that Victoria is expecting a child.
Victoria is completely helpless and is supported by Antonieta Orzoco, (Erika Buenfil) who also helps deliver her daughter, Maria. They work in a sewing company owned by Rodolfo Padilla, (Salvador Pineda) who one day rapes Victoria and father of Federico Padilla (Mauricio Garcia Muela). In the mean time, Bernarda has every intention of killing Victoria and her daughter, she then runs them over with her car. Victoria is taken to the hospital while little Maria wanders away on the street, thus never seeing each other again.
Since then, Victoria and Antonieta look for the girl but never get any leads and they soon lose hope. Victoria, full of rage and pain, swears to God that nobody will ever humiliate her again.
Couple of years later, Victoria has fulfilled her pledge and she is now a major fashion designer with her friend Antonieta by her side. Victoria was very happily married to Osvaldo Sandoval, (Osvaldo Rios) who is an popular actor, who has two children, Maximiliano "Max" Sandoval Guiterrez , (William Levy) and Fernanda "Fer" Sandoval Gutierrez, (Livia Brito) . Apparently everything was perfect for Victoria, but when she's alone with Antonieta, she expresses her true feelings about her family and the terrible suffering for the loss of her daughter.
Maria Desamparada/Maria Iturbide de Guiterrez Sandoval "Mary Forsaken" (Maite Perroni) who is now a young woman who is ready to go leave the orphanage where she grew up. Linda, (Dorismar) and Natí, (Suzana Diazayas), become her roommates. They each support one another emotionally.
Maria meets Osvaldo, and learns that the girl's dream is to become a fashion model. She also, has great admiration for Victoria. Osvaldo invites the girl to meet his wife, Victoria, who is far from friendly. Victoria treats her with contempt and arrogance, especially since the physical resemblance between Maria and Victoria (when she was young) is so uncanny. As for Maria's love interest, her life is intertwined with Max and from the time when they meet, their love grows. It is soon rejected by Victoria and interrupted by the whimsical Ximena de Alba, Max`s ex-girlfriend, (Dominika Paleta).
Max is the adopted son of Victoria, but has grown up loving her as his own mother. He has had many relationships, but Ximena, a childhood friend, has been the steady woman in his life with their mothers' full approval. It was rumored that she had been unfaithful to him and so they broke up. When he meets Maria his intentions were to seduce her and have a good time. However as the story progresses, he finds true love with Maria. Victoria doesn't want Maria as Max's wife. Ximena returns and tries to separate them by telling him that she's pregnant, forcing Max to leave Maria.
Filled with rage and grief over what Victoria has done to her relationship and knowing she is also expecting a child from Max, Maria seeks help in the arms of her father Juan Pablo, who is now a respected priest. In a secret confession, Bernarda reveals to Juan Pablo that Maria is the daughter he had with Victoria. He then more than ever tries to protect and help her.
Victoria has hidden her past to protect her and her husband's reputation. Both Victoria and Osvaldo's lives are so busy that Osvaldo feels lonely and seeks love with another woman. This happens to be the young and attractive Linda. Osvaldo also keeps his own secret. He told Max and everyone else that Leonela Montenegro (his first wife) (Monica Ayos), had died, but she was actually in a mental health institution. Only his deceiving friend Guillermo knows the truth. Guillermo "Alvaro" Quintana, (Guillermo Garcia Cantu) and Ofelia Garcia, (Andrea Garcia), try to destroy Osvaldo's career and family because he had always felt overshadowed by his friend's successes. Guillermo was deeply in love with Osvaldo's first wife. He thought Osvaldo took the love of his life away from him. Ofelia thought the same because she was dating and deeply in love with Osvaldo when Victoria came into the picture. Soon after Osvaldo fell deeply in love with Victoria and married her. Guillermo is actually Ximena's lover, and as it turns out, the child she is carrying is actually his.
Meanwhile, Max unwillingly marries Ximena unaware that the child she is having is not his. Ximena has an accident which causes the doctor to do a c-section. Ximena and the baby's lives were in danger because of the accident caused by Max.
By this time, Maria and Victoria despise each other. Maria tries to make it easier for everyone by deciding to leave with Alonso del Angel, (Mark Tacher). He is her new friend and a former lover of Ximena. Ximena was pregnant with Alonso's child but decides to abort it. Ximena's baby is now doing better in the hospital but then, Guillermo goes to the hospital. He confesses to Osvaldo that the baby is his and not Max's. Osvaldo then visits Ximena and to everyone's shock says the baby is really Guillermo's. Although does he really want to hurt Max anymore? The baby finally leaves the hospital but under a nurse's care. Max then calls it quits at Casa Victoria/Casa Bernarda. Later on, Alonso calls Juan Pablo to tell him Maria is in labor. Juan Pablo goes to tell Max. He becomes so excited and accompanies Juan Pablo to see his child. Alonso and Max battle over the love of Maria. Meanwhile Victoria and Osvaldo know that the baby is not Max's, they confront Ximena about it and tell her that they will not tell Max of this lie but that she has to leave the house. Ximena leaves the Sandoval's home and goes to find refuge at Bernarda's house. They were united together to destroy the Sandoval's family.
Bernarda had befriended Maria and as time goes on, tries to poison Maria's soul against Victoria. Antonieta comforts Victoria's suffering and heartbreak of her daughter and the betrayal of Osvaldo. Juan Pablo attempts to confess to Maria that she is his daughter. Osvaldo has fears about his dark secrets and regrets having cheated on his wife with Linda. Max looked for ways to win back his beloved Maria, knowing that a beautiful boy is the product of their love. Victoria and Maria, who after a great series of tests, finally are reunited. When Victoria's life is in danger, Maria finally realizes that there is no greater pain than losing a mother for a second time. Only then is it possible that between mother and daughter, and the true love of Maria and Max, love triumphs (Triunfo del Amor).
