Lorena and Sara were raised together in an orphanage, and even though they have different personalities, they loved each other as sisters. Lorena dreams of starting her own family and loves to cook, while Sara is more materialistic; she has always hated the poverty of the orphanage, and she has more ambitions than values.
Lorena's greatest wish is to become a chef and so, one day she says goodbye to the nuns who raised her at the orphanage and leaves to study cuisine in Mexico City. That same day, the Mother Superior discovers that Sara had stolen some of the funds of the orphanage. However, after she confronts Sara, she suffers a heart attack and dies. So to avoid getting caught any further, Sara runs with her lover and accomplice Chalo, who is also the delivery guy/driver of the orphanage. But before she leaves, she goes through the files the Mother Superior had in her office for each orphaned child and stole two files – hers and Lorena's.
When she finally reads them, she learns that she was found in the garbage dump, while Lorena was abandoned in the orphanage without explanation by her grandmother, the millionaire Hortensia Armendáriz. Sara's first impulse is to find Lorena and help her confront her grandmother and demand her rights, but then she reconsiders her options and decides to usurp her place in the Armendáriz gastronomic empire. Believing she would never see Lorena again, Sara thought her plan was foolproof.
Unaware of what happened, Lorena finds work as a cook's aid in her own grandmother's company – a lady who is ruthless in her work area and demands perfection from all her workers. Lorena also meets a young doctor called Alonso and they fall in love with each other at first sight. Later on, Sara has an unexpected reunion with Lorena in the company and the girl's constant presence infuriates her and feels that if Lorena were to ever know the truth of her past she may want to reclaim what is truly hers and she would be once again poor. So Sara's mind betrays her and she is gradually overwhelmed by a desire to take everything away from Lorena, including Alonso, and get rid of her once and for all. When Lorena learns that Sara was abandoned by her grandmother, she cries for her friend and is filled with contempt for Hortensia. Meanwhile, Hortensia uses all her resources to avoid confronting the pain she has caused to everyone around her. Eventually, Sara managed to take away everything that belonged to Lorena, her life, her love and even her parents who for a while believed Sara to be their long lost daughter.
When Lorena starts to discover Sara's evil machinations against her, she realizes that she never truly knew the one she loved as a sister. But in spite of her broken heart, she will bravely face betrayal, deceit and cruelty and even find a new hope hand in hand with someone she never expected to love – Ernesto. A man who at first glance seemed the total opposite of who she was. She never dreamed that they would have something special between them, but Ernesto managed to convince her otherwise. Slowly he reconstructs Lorena's broken heart, healing it with his love for her and showing her to love and trust someone else again.

Victoria Gutierrez de Sandoval, (Victoria Ruffo) who is introduced in the beginning and is attracted to Juan Pablo Iturbide de Montejo, (Diego Olivera) who is a future priest and son of Octavio Iturbide, (Eduardo Santamarina) and Bernarda Montejo Vda. de Iturbide, (Daniela Romo) who is the homeowner of the Mr. and Ms. Iturbide's house where both was employed. This attraction is reciprocated and on a night of passion, Victoria was becomes pregnant, she discovers the pregnancy and throws Victoria out of her house without Juan Pablo knowing that Victoria is expecting a child.
Victoria is completely helpless and is supported by Antonieta Orzoco, (Erika Buenfil) who also helps deliver her daughter, Maria. They work in a sewing company owned by Rodolfo Padilla, (Salvador Pineda) who one day rapes Victoria and father of Federico Padilla (Mauricio Garcia Muela). In the mean time, Bernarda has every intention of killing Victoria and her daughter, she then runs them over with her car. Victoria is taken to the hospital while little Maria wanders away on the street, thus never seeing each other again.
Since then, Victoria and Antonieta look for the girl but never get any leads and they soon lose hope. Victoria, full of rage and pain, swears to God that nobody will ever humiliate her again.
Couple of years later, Victoria has fulfilled her pledge and she is now a major fashion designer with her friend Antonieta by her side. Victoria was very happily married to Osvaldo Sandoval, (Osvaldo Rios) who is an popular actor, who has two children, Maximiliano "Max" Sandoval Guiterrez , (William Levy) and Fernanda "Fer" Sandoval Gutierrez, (Livia Brito) . Apparently everything was perfect for Victoria, but when she's alone with Antonieta, she expresses her true feelings about her family and the terrible suffering for the loss of her daughter.
Maria Desamparada/Maria Iturbide de Guiterrez Sandoval "Mary Forsaken" (Maite Perroni) who is now a young woman who is ready to go leave the orphanage where she grew up. Linda, (Dorismar) and Natí, (Suzana Diazayas), become her roommates. They each support one another emotionally.
Maria meets Osvaldo, and learns that the girl's dream is to become a fashion model. She also, has great admiration for Victoria. Osvaldo invites the girl to meet his wife, Victoria, who is far from friendly. Victoria treats her with contempt and arrogance, especially since the physical resemblance between Maria and Victoria (when she was young) is so uncanny. As for Maria's love interest, her life is intertwined with Max and from the time when they meet, their love grows. It is soon rejected by Victoria and interrupted by the whimsical Ximena de Alba, Max`s ex-girlfriend, (Dominika Paleta).
Max is the adopted son of Victoria, but has grown up loving her as his own mother. He has had many relationships, but Ximena, a childhood friend, has been the steady woman in his life with their mothers' full approval. It was rumored that she had been unfaithful to him and so they broke up. When he meets Maria his intentions were to seduce her and have a good time. However as the story progresses, he finds true love with Maria. Victoria doesn't want Maria as Max's wife. Ximena returns and tries to separate them by telling him that she's pregnant, forcing Max to leave Maria.
Filled with rage and grief over what Victoria has done to her relationship and knowing she is also expecting a child from Max, Maria seeks help in the arms of her father Juan Pablo, who is now a respected priest. In a secret confession, Bernarda reveals to Juan Pablo that Maria is the daughter he had with Victoria. He then more than ever tries to protect and help her.
Victoria has hidden her past to protect her and her husband's reputation. Both Victoria and Osvaldo's lives are so busy that Osvaldo feels lonely and seeks love with another woman. This happens to be the young and attractive Linda. Osvaldo also keeps his own secret. He told Max and everyone else that Leonela Montenegro (his first wife) (Monica Ayos), had died, but she was actually in a mental health institution. Only his deceiving friend Guillermo knows the truth. Guillermo "Alvaro" Quintana, (Guillermo Garcia Cantu) and Ofelia Garcia, (Andrea Garcia), try to destroy Osvaldo's career and family because he had always felt overshadowed by his friend's successes. Guillermo was deeply in love with Osvaldo's first wife. He thought Osvaldo took the love of his life away from him. Ofelia thought the same because she was dating and deeply in love with Osvaldo when Victoria came into the picture. Soon after Osvaldo fell deeply in love with Victoria and married her. Guillermo is actually Ximena's lover, and as it turns out, the child she is carrying is actually his.
Meanwhile, Max unwillingly marries Ximena unaware that the child she is having is not his. Ximena has an accident which causes the doctor to do a c-section. Ximena and the baby's lives were in danger because of the accident caused by Max.
By this time, Maria and Victoria despise each other. Maria tries to make it easier for everyone by deciding to leave with Alonso del Angel, (Mark Tacher). He is her new friend and a former lover of Ximena. Ximena was pregnant with Alonso's child but decides to abort it. Ximena's baby is now doing better in the hospital but then, Guillermo goes to the hospital. He confesses to Osvaldo that the baby is his and not Max's. Osvaldo then visits Ximena and to everyone's shock says the baby is really Guillermo's. Although does he really want to hurt Max anymore? The baby finally leaves the hospital but under a nurse's care. Max then calls it quits at Casa Victoria/Casa Bernarda. Later on, Alonso calls Juan Pablo to tell him Maria is in labor. Juan Pablo goes to tell Max. He becomes so excited and accompanies Juan Pablo to see his child. Alonso and Max battle over the love of Maria. Meanwhile Victoria and Osvaldo know that the baby is not Max's, they confront Ximena about it and tell her that they will not tell Max of this lie but that she has to leave the house. Ximena leaves the Sandoval's home and goes to find refuge at Bernarda's house. They were united together to destroy the Sandoval's family.
Bernarda had befriended Maria and as time goes on, tries to poison Maria's soul against Victoria. Antonieta comforts Victoria's suffering and heartbreak of her daughter and the betrayal of Osvaldo. Juan Pablo attempts to confess to Maria that she is his daughter. Osvaldo has fears about his dark secrets and regrets having cheated on his wife with Linda. Max looked for ways to win back his beloved Maria, knowing that a beautiful boy is the product of their love. Victoria and Maria, who after a great series of tests, finally are reunited. When Victoria's life is in danger, Maria finally realizes that there is no greater pain than losing a mother for a second time. Only then is it possible that between mother and daughter, and the true love of Maria and Max, love triumphs (Triunfo del Amor).

Maria de Jesus "Marichuy" was born. Her mother, Cecilia Velarde, believing she was dying, entrusted her baby to a priest, named Father Anselmo, who takes her to an orphanage. At the age of 15, Marichuy runs away and begins to live in the streets, doing her best to survive. Years go by and one day, she is attacked by a drunk. This experience, as well as having terrible recurrent nightmares, leaves her with a deep resentment towards men. Candelaria, a washer woman, offers her a home, and treats her like a daughter. Marichuy performs odd and big jobs to help Candelaria.
One day, Marichuy's mischievous generosity causes trouble and lands her in court, where the judge, her biological father, (though neither of them are aware of this), wishes to send her to jail. On the other hand Juan Miguel San Roman, who recently survived a plane crash, which killed his wife Viviana (In reality Viviana is actually alive and had decided to live a life of luxury), believes that Marichuy is just an innocent girl. Marichuy is defended by Juan Miguel San Roman, who is able to see the good in Marichuy. Marichuy is released under Juan Miguel's custody and he arranges for her to stay in his house with his daughter, Mayita, his mother-in-law, Onelia, and his sister, Rocio. While Marichuy is at his house, they start to fall in love with each other. But then Juan Miguel takes Marichuy to the Velarde household to prevent that love from flourishing.
The only people Marichuy gets along with there are Cecilia (Patricio's wife and Marichuy's biological mother) and a maid, unlike the others, Patricio and Estefania, who claims to be the Velarde's long lost daughter. Estefania has shown great distaste for Marichuy because she too likes Juan Miguel. Once Estefania and her Aunt, Isabella, realize Marichuy is the real daughter of the Velardes, they cause Marichuy to go through bad experiences, such as making it look like Marichuy robbed money from the Velardes. Cecilia becomes torn between her "real" daughter Estefania, and Marichuy, with whom she has developed a strong bond. Eventually, Estefania manages to start a relationship with Juan Miguel, which provokes jealousy in Marichuy. When Patricio has had enough of Marichuy's "lies and behaviour", Marichuy expresses to Juan Miguel that she wants to live with him because she doesn't want to live with the Velardes anymore. Juan Miguel gives in to her request and takes her with him.
There Juan Miguel finds out that he was the one who attacked her when she was young and knows she doesn't really understand what happened. When Juan Miguel starts to avoid her because of his guilt, Marichuy thinks he hates her, but instead Juan Miguel tells her he loves her. Juan Miguel had arranged to marry Estefania, but when he has an accident he has a change of heart and tells Marichuy he will marry her.
Father Anselmo and Eduardo (Juan Miguel's trusted friend) warns Juan Miguel to tell Marichuy he was the one that attacked her before they are married but fearing her rejection he does not say anything to Marichuy. They get married regardless and spend a beautiful honeymoon together. However, the next morning Marichuy wakes up from a nightmare and realizes Juan Miguel was her attacker. He pleads for her forgiveness but she does not forgive him and she returns with Candelaria.
A couple of days after the incident, Juan Miguel visits an institution where he suddenly recognizes the new patient. With great disbelief, he looks at his supposedly dead wife. At that moment, he takes up the responsibility to know what happened to his wife and to help her recover.
Marichuy soon realizes she is pregnant and that she does love Juan Miguel despite what he did to her; she goes to Juan Miguel's house to forgive him. Instead of giving Marichuy a positive response, he gives her the news that their marriage is invalid because his wife is not dead. Heartbroken, she returns to Candelaria and goes to speak with Father Anselmo who says he will comply with her request to take her far away to where nobody knows who she is.
Marichuy arrives at the hacienda and meets Leopardo/Omar Contreras who is aggressive and seemingly cold-hearted because of his love tragedy with Ivette/Blanca Silva. Yet as time passed, her kind words and innocence eventually changes his ways and he falls in love with her. Leopardo, despite knowing she is pregnant, proposes to be a father to the baby and a husband to Marichuy. Marichuy cannot make a decision because, despite everything she still loves Juan Miguel.
When Marichuy reads in a newspaper that Juan Miguel's wife was killed by Ivette and that he must need her support, she decides to leave without telling Leopardo and go back to Juan Miguel. After arriving back in Mexico she finds out that Juan Miguel is actually engaged with Blanca (Mayita's governess who suffers from a double personality disorder, in which she becomes Ivette). Marichuy decides not to go back to Juan Miguel, but continue her career as an actress. After a while, Juan Miguel finds out that Marichuy returned. Unexpectedly, Juan Miguel is also reunited with Omar, a long-time friend, who has come in search of a woman he loves named Lirio who is really Marichuy. Juan Miguel does not know Lirio is Marichuy.
Marichuy and Omar get engaged again, although he shows signs of jealousy when Marichuy has any sort of contact with Juan Miguel. Marichuy continues to act in several successful plays when a desperate Estefania decides to end Marichuy's life by putting real bullets in a gun that was used in a prop for Marichuy's show. Marichuy suffers a head injury, which causes her to lose her sight. At this time, Omar realizes he loves Blanca not Marichuy, so he leaves her. Marichuy pretends she regained her sight back only so Omar can be happy without any guilt and so that Juan Miguel can stay away from her.
Not long after, Estefania and her aunt Isabella are suspected in the attempted murder. Estefania denies everything, but her aunt, pressured by the police, admits that Estefania wanted to kill Marichuy. Estefania is arrested, but not after the truth is revealed. Marichuy's father suffers a heart attack when he realizes how cruel he has been to Marichuy when it was actually Estefania's fault.
While Marichuy's father is recovering in the hospital, Marichuy forgives him and they finally develop a father and daughter bond.
Juan Miguel then accepts that Marichuy doesn't love him and decides to leave Mexico, but before he leaves, Marichuy wants to get back with him. When he visits her on his last day he tells her he is leaving and she lets him leave without telling him she loves him. Yet on his trip, Onelia (Juan Miguel's mother-in-law) calls him to tell him that Marichuy is still blind so he returns and finds Marichuy in front of Anselmo's church. He tries to talk to her, provoking her to run and causing her to get hit by a car. She is okay but because of the accident she will never be able to see even if she has surgery. Juan Miguel leaves to study eye surgery in the United States so that when he returns he can perform surgery on Marichuy to regain her sight.
On his trip, Ana Julia, Marichuy's friend begins to have evil intentions because of her jealously towards Marichuy and her sudden attraction to Juan Miguel. She, like Estefania, tries everything to get Marichuy to hate Juan Miguel. When Marichuy develops a tumour in her head and needs surgery, her father does not want to allow Juan Miguel to perform the surgery, even though he is the best surgeon in Mexico. When he finds out that Marichuy is about to die, he comes to his senses and lets Juan Miguel operate on Marichuy. Ana Julia tries to stop Juan Miguel because she wants Marichuy to die, but it does not work. She then plans to drug Juan Miguel and later pretends that she and Juan Miguel had sexual relations.
Ana Julia declares that she is pregnant with his child but the baby's real father is actually Amador. When Juan Miguel finishes Marichuy's operation, Vicente returns and helps Amador to kidnap Rafael and when everyone learns that Rafael is kidnapped, Marichuy says she will not take the bandages off unless Rafael is safe. So Juan Miguel calls Rafael's father and tells him this while Vincente calls the Velardes to tell them about Rafael's kidnapping. Juan Miguel recognizes his voice. Vicente demands a ransom, so Rafael's father gives them the money and gets Rafael back.
Marichuy sees once again, but then rejects Juan Miguel. She then plans to run away with the baby and help others in the world that need her along with another man who is also in love with Marichuy. Juan Miguel tries to tell her that they can be together, but Marichuy does not listen. Days pass, until Amador admits that Ana Julia is really pregnant with his child. Ana Julia and Vicente come to stop Amador from telling the truth, but they are too late. Ana Julia loses her temper and tries to take the gun from Amador. This leads to the death of Vicente, who is shot by accident. Marichuy calls Juan Miguel to help her. So Juan Miguel comes and tells everyone that Vicente can not live. Marichuy thanks Juan Miguel for all the things that he had done. The two are finally together again. Amador is put in jail.
While Juan Miguel and Marichuy spend a day together, Marichuy admits that she wants to be Juan Miguel's wife again. He agrees and so they plan to marry. On the day of their wedding, Marichuy enters the church to thank the lord. Marichuy receives a letter from Juan Miguel who seems to have a surprise for her. But Marichuy discovers that it was Ana Julia, who then knocks her out. Ana Julia leaves a letter saying that if Juan Miguel's love is not for her, then it will not be for Marichuy. Ana Julia takes Marichuy to a trailer(the same one that Amador held Rafael hostage). Ana Julia then lights it on fire to kill herself, her unborn baby, and Marichuy. Ana Julia also suddenly goes into labour. Despite Ana Julia telling her to leave her, Marichuy gets her and herself out, then delivers Ana Julia's daughter. Ana Julia dies due to too much smoke in her lungs, but before she does she apologizes to Marichuy for all the bad things she did to her. Juan Miguel thinks Marichury is dead when he sees the flames, but then Marichuy comes from the back of the building holding Anna Julia's baby. After that, they both decide to give the baby to Purita and Adrian. Marichuy and Juan Miguel are finally married and they spend their honeymoon with Mayita and Juanito. The show ends with the new family all dressed in white, playing soccer at the beach, together, happy... finally a big family. This telenovela is currently showing on TV Africa in Ghana.
